Located in Ojo Caliente, NM. Cute little restaurant. All the food is cooked to order. Prices are not too bad. There was a mix up with my order of a cheese enchilada, the girl asked for what kind of sauce I'd like, I told her red, but if it doesn't come with meat. She answered me, it was cheese. When my order came, my sauce had meat in it. If you are a vegetarian, you have to be persistent in the no meat sauce option. The food was really good. Authentic. I just had my sauce issue and felt all awkward after wards. If you are visiting the Ojo Caliente hot springs, this is a great alternative if you are on a budget and need a bite to eat.

Good food and service. I enjoyed my enchiladas and my special friend enjoyed her burrito. Not much for atmosphere.

Woohoo, I'm the first to review this little spot! I was visiting Taos with my sister and BFF a little over a week ago, and on our way up to Taos, we stayed at the Ojo Caliente hot springs spa for the night. The next day, we missed breakfast at the Artesian restaurant because we decided to soak some more before leaving, and decided to stop "in town" for a bite to eat before heading up to Taos. We hit Hwy 285, and had 3 options for food. We decided by pure chance to try El Taquito Cafe (really, it was the "truckers and bikers welcome" sign in the window that decided for us) and popped in. The decor was...early 70s bachelor uncle's rec room, if I must describe it. Blue wall to wall carpet, dark faux wood paneling on the walls, and a few interesting pieces of art on the walls. Actually, there was a kind of cool cowboy painting that I liked a lot. The restroom set up was intriguing - there was a step up platform area with the toilet perched atop, and the toilet paper holder was about 2 feet below the toilet on the side of the sink, which required that I reach for it whilst relying on my old yoga moves... There were a couple of locals in the cafe (based on how they were chatting with the waitress), but it was otherwise empty. We missed the breakfast menu (once again), but the lunch menu was promising. I opted for the huevos rancheros (felt most breakfasty) with green chile, and a sopapilla on the side to soak up my chile and sunny side up egg yolks. Man, it was really really good! My BFF had chicken enchiladas with green chile and an egg on top (again, a breakfasty touch), and my sister went with the BLT. I stole some of her fries and they were good. The waitress was very sweet and paid just enough attention to us. The bill was barely over $20, and that included a couple cokes and my friend's chi-chi mocha latte. There was also a chocolate layer cake in the glass fridge behind the counter that my friend had a perfect view of, and she obsessed about it for a while, but decided not to have any since she polished off her enchiladas. If staying at Ojo or just passing through and you want a tasty, inexpensive breakfast or lunch, I heartily recommend El Taquito!

I will have to differ with the generally-positive reviews others have posted. We stopped by at lunchtime over the weekend. Our table was covered in crumbs, and decorated with a bowl of the previous occupants' half-eaten salsa. Waitress seemed unfamiliar with the menu. Food took over 30 minutes to arrive. Scrambled eggs were nice & fluffy but hash browns were so overcooked as to be inedible. New Mexican food was very greasy, and the rice & beans tasted like they came out of a can. Bathroom was out of toilet paper and paper towels- eww.

Nice little spot. I had a great authentic chicharron burrito smothered in green chile. My friends had the enchilada plate and were equally impressed. A little pricy however, and they DON'T serve beer. :-(

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
